Position Statement:

I am humbled by the nomination to serve the members of the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS). I prefer to write about “us” and “we” instead of “I” but in the interest of the voting membership, I will briefly summarize what qualities and experience I will bring if asked to serve. My personal and professional accomplishments were created by great family, great mentors, great teachers, great friends, and a great specialty. I understand the academic perspective following a robust 30-year academic career at the University of Michigan. From there I served the Institution as Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs accountable for the ambulatory arm of Michigan Medicine, in addition to serving as Executive Director of the University of Michigan Medical Group (UMMG Faculty Group Practice).  One of the UMMG roles required leading faculty, departments, and chairs serving as a clinical champion, appreciating the competing priorities that faculty face in reaching their diverse missions within the academic medical center. During this administrative stint, I played a central leadership role in guiding enumerable changes during a time of unprecedented growth and expansion in Michigan Medicine. I also helped to spearhead new institutional programs centered on addressing health-care inequities and fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in Michigan Medicine and its training programs.

I retired from the University of Michigan in 2020.  As the driving force of my entire career has been the joy and goal of elite patient care, I chose to enter private practice as the next chapter. During these past few years, the thrill of private practice care delivery has been energizing and rejuvenating. I always believed that those who push the frontiers of discovery are noble, while those who work tirelessly in service to their patients are special. Our specialty must have both to reach our full potential. While the advancement of our specialty needs academic achievement, we must all remember that the heart and soul remains clinical care and private practice. My experience in leadership, academics, administration, and private practice gives me a sound perspective for the Board and our specialty. I am in position to serve our ACMS with integrity, sense of humor, finesse, experience, and energy in any capacity asked. There are many known and future unknown local, regional, and national needs and challenges that will need to be met.  Our College and specialty need to navigate in political, business, and administrative arenas. Inspired leadership, energy, work, and fluidity are part of the secret sauce needed to react, evolve, and adjust when and where needed. I feel my background and experience enables me to bring a unique skillset to the ACMS Board of Directors. Together, with the many brilliant members of our diverse College, we will move forward and continue to make our specialty proud. It would be my sincere honor and privilege to serve the ACMS membership as a Director on the ACMS Board of Directors. Thank you for your consideration.
