Position Statement:
Dear colleagues,
I am humbled by this nomination for a position on the ACMS Board of Directors. Like many of you, I consider the American College of Mohs Surgery to be my professional home and strongly identify with its mission. The offerings the ACMS provides to its community of members – stretching from a high-quality annual meeting to legislative work and educational endeavors – is unrivaled in procedural dermatology. I am strongly committed to the success of the organization. I believe the members are the ACMS’ greatest asset and the ACMS organization is a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon’s greatest advocate.
Over the past six years, I have had the privilege of contributing to the ACMS in several ways. I was the host of the ACMS podcast Conversations in Mohs Surgery and spoke to many of you in this role on a monthly basis. As I transition out of this role, I want to thank all of you for listening! Last year, I was tasked with the development of the Mohs Pathology Excellence Initiative. As I firmly believe we are only as good as the quality of our frozen section slides, assuming this role has been very rewarding. In addition to the ongoing work of the initiative’s Slide Review subcommittee, the initiative had an incredibly successful MART-1 immunohistochemistry training webinar this fall to make this technique more broadly accessible and is rolling out weekly board-style pathology practice questions utilizing whole scanned slides and conventional images..
My greatest honor has been the invitation to serve as scientific program chair for the 2023 Annual Meeting. Creating an inspiring meeting with evidence-based, cutting-edge content relevant to all attendees and selecting high-quality speakers representing our diverse membership has been a fulfilling undertaking. These opportunities have taught me about the leadership structure of the ACMS, the invaluable asset the ACMS staff represents, the importance of well-organized and executed meetings, and completing commitments and assignments reliably.
I pledge to bring the same level of dedication to a position on the Board of Directors. My recent transition from academia to private practice in North Carolina has given me a broad view of different practice settings which will allow me to serve the membership at large. I would love to be a member of the Board of Directors and work with the ACMS staff, the executive committee, and fellow board members to shape the future and growth of the ACMS.
Thank you for your vote,
Thomas J. Knackstedt, MD, MPH
