Position Statement:
It has been a year of unforeseeable change and need for rapid adaptation. Times like these invite pause for
reflection and prioritization. I am honored to be nominated for a position on the Board of Directors of the
American College of Mohs Surgery and am committed to working with peers to help identify core issues,
contemplate challenges, and navigate improvement.
I am a Professor of Dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco, based out of the University and
VA hospitals, and Director of the UCSF Mohs Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology fellowship. I completed my
fellowship training in 2006, following a circuitous route of board certification and work in internal medicine. My
life and academic experiences have taught me that it is distance traveled as well as surprise and serendipity,
which yield the rare experiences encountered, and the finest people met along the way.
My interest and service to our specialty has focused on education, the recruitment and training of our future
colleagues, evidence based practice in cutaneous oncology, the development of board certification
examinations, and improving diversity. I have the pleasure of serving the ACMS as Vice Chair of the
Fellowship Training Committee and member of the Diversity Task Force, and the American Board of
Dermatology on the Surgical and Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery Exam Development Committee. I have
served the Association of Professors of Dermatology on the Surgical Section Steering Committee, the
American Joint Committee on Cancer, and the American Academy of Dermatology Workgroup developing
guidelines for cutaneous oncology. I am grateful for these opportunities and the chance to work with many
exceptional members of our college.
The upcoming year landmarks the transition of our specialty to board certification, a critical time for outreach to
educate patients, physicians, and payers on the advantages of care by fellowship-trained, board certified Mohs
surgeons. If elected, I will continue to work with colleagues to maintain the high integrity and uphold the
standards of our specialty through advocacy, developing guidelines for evidence based practice, transition to
board examination and certification, and the thoughtful recruitment and training of future colleagues and
leaders keeping diversity and holistic review in mind. I will be mindful of members’ needs in an ever-changing
environment.
I appreciate your vote and am thankful for the opportunity to continue my service to the American College of
Mohs Surgery and surgical and cutaneous oncology education and training.
